High Returns, High Barrier: Ghana Gold Coin Yields 16.7% Amid Accessibility Concerns——If you bought a Ghana Gold Coin when it was launched in November 2024, you would have made a profit of about 16% by now.
The one-ounce coin went from GH₵43,328.40 to GH₵50,593.11, a 16.7% increase. The half-ounce coin rose from GH₵22,068.74 to GH₵25,710.75, a 16.5% increase, while the quarter-ounce coin climbed from GH₵11,470.89 to GH₵13,301.05, representing a 15.9% gain.
These gains are similar to what you’d get from a 6-month treasury bill, which currently gives about 16.2% interest. However, it’s less than the 23.9% increase in global gold prices over the same time.
The Bank of Ghana introduced the Ghana Gold Coin to give Ghanaians a way to invest in gold, use local gold and promote national pride, and help manage the amount of money (cedis) in the system.
Each coin is made of 99.99% pure gold, with the Ghana Coat of Arms on one side and the Independence Arch on the other. Prices are updated daily based on international gold market rates.
Ghana’s gold coin follows similar examples from other countries.
South Africa has the Krugerrand, one of the world’s most popular gold coins. Canada sells the Maple Leaf coin, and the U.S. sells the American Gold Eagle—both used for investment and collecting. Zimbabwe launched the Mosi-oa-Tunya Gold Coin in 2022 to protect people from inflation, and it’s doing well.
Even though the Ghana Gold Coin has performed well, most people can’t afford it. A one-ounce coin now costs over GH₵50,000, which is too expensive for many Ghanaians.
Also, since the returns are about the same as treasury bills, some investors may not see enough benefit to switch to gold coins—especially with no smaller or cheaper options available.
However, for wealthier individuals and institutions, the Ghana Gold Coin still offers a safe and valuable investment, especially as global gold prices keep rising.
As gold prices continue to go up, many are hoping that the Bank of Ghana will introduce smaller coins or other ways to make gold investment more accessible to many willing investors.
