Ghana Moves to Standardize Premix Fuel Prices, Launch Automated Vending Stations—

Ghana‘s fishing and maritime industries are set for a major shift as the National Premix Fuel Committee moves to standardize pricing and operationalize automated fuel vending stations nationwide. The initiative, led by Committee Chairman Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, aims to eliminate pricing inconsistencies and combat middlemen activities that inflate costs for fisherfolk and boat operators.

Premix fuel, essential for Ghana’s coastal and inland fisheries, has long suffered from price disparities due to distribution inefficiencies and middlemen manipulation. Many fishermen and boat owners have faced supply shortages and inflated prices, which significantly impact their earnings.

Speaking on the committee’s agenda, Dafeamekpor underscored the importance of establishing a uniform pricing model to stabilize the market and protect end users.

Ghana to Standardize Premix Fuel Prices, Expand Automated Vending Stations

“The other thing that will be a top priority for my committee is to ensure uniformity in the pricing of the product across the country,” he stated.

To enforce compliance, the committee has issued strict directives: any Landing Beach Committee (LBC)—whether inland or marine caught overpricing premix fuel will face immediate sanctions, including the dismissal of committee members responsible for violations.

Automated Fuel Stations to Curb Hoarding

A key component of this reform is the operationalization of automated premix fuel vending stations. These stations are designed to cut out middlemen who hoard fuel and resell it at inflated prices, ensuring that premix fuel reaches its intended users directly.

So far, 30 vending stations are operational, with an additional 80 set to launch soon. This expansion will significantly improve access to premix fuel and reduce bottlenecks in the supply chain.

“The operationalisation of vending points helps reduce the participation of middlemen, who naturally want to purchase the fuel, hoard it, and increase prices before selling to the final users,” Dafeamekpor explained.

Training & Stakeholder Engagement

Beyond pricing and distribution reforms, the Premix Fuel Committee is also focusing on training and capacity building for landing beach committees. The goal is to educate stakeholders, particularly fisherfolk, about the new pricing system and operational guidelines to ensure smooth implementation.

By tackling inefficiencies in fuel distribution and pricing, the committee hopes to bring relief to Ghana’s fishing communities, enhancing productivity and economic stability in the sector.
