E-Levy Refunds Expected by April 7 After Repeal – Electronic Money Issuers Chamber

E-Levy Refunds Expected by April 7 After Repeal – Electronic Money Issuers Chamber—–The Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) Chamber of Ghana has confirmed that all Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) charges deducted from mobile money and electronic transfers made from April 2, 2025, will be fully refunded by April 7, 2025.

The announcement follows a directive from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in line with the recently passed Electronic Transfer Levy (Repeal) Act, 2025, which officially abolishes the tax introduced in 2022.

Member institutions of the EMIs Chamber, including AT Money, G-Money, Zeepay, and others, have already begun processing refunds and are implementing safeguards to prevent further unintended deductions.

In a statement, the Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, consumer protection, and the broader vision of a cash-lite, digital-first economy.”

“We are working closely with the GRA and our member institutions to ensure that all affected customers receive their refunds on time,” it said.

“Our systems have been adjusted to prevent further E-Levy deductions,” the Chamber noted.

The repeal of the E-Levy comes as part of the government‘s broader efforts to streamline Ghana’s tax regime and promote financial inclusion.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson earlier announced the removal of the levy as part of measures to support the digital economy and ease the cost of electronic transactions for citizens and businesses alike.

The E-Levy, which charged 1.5% (later reduced to 1%) on electronic money transfers, faced public criticism for discouraging mobile money usage and impacting lower-income users.

With the refund process being implemented, the EMIs Chamber has encouraged customers to monitor their mobile wallets and contact their service providers for any unresolved issues.
