All Eyes on MPC as Individual Member Votes Set for First-Ever Public Release

All Eyes on MPC as Individual Member Votes Set for First-Ever Public Release—–Some Ghanaians are in high spirits awaiting the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana since individual members’ verdicts will be published for the consumption of the public.

This is the first time the public will get to know the individual verdicts of the members of the MPC. This move, which can be likened to the judgement of Supreme Court judges, is being hailed as a milestone in the country’s financial governance.

The unprecedented move, announced by the new governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, at the National Economic Dialogue earlier this month, is to ensure accountability and transparency. The governor believes that full disclosure of each member’s decision will provide a new level of openness and enhance the credibility and confidence in the bank.

High Anticipation Awaits MPC Decision as Individual Members' Verdict Will Be Published for the First Time

This, he believes, enhances the work of the Central Bank challenging the long-practiced tradition of opaque verdicts that characterised MPC decision.

“You notice that, up to now, you don’t get to hear why individual members opted for whether the rate should stay the same, or should be increased, or be lowered. You don’t get to hear that. All that we hear is, it is an unanimous decision. But in actual fact, there are divergent views, you know, through those sessions. What we are going to be doing now is, individual members’ submissions will be published,” Dr. Johnson Asiama announced at the National Economic Dialogue.

He added, “you will get to understand the basis for which actions were taken. And for me, that is at the core of what we do. We want the academia, we want the media, we want the private sector themselves to understand that we are in the same boat.”

The 123rd Regular Meeting under the governorship of Dr. Asiama is currently ongoing. The meeting began on Monday, March 24, 2025, and it’s expected to end on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

The usual press briefing to announce the decision will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The new direction to publish individual members’ decisions has ignited intense public interest, with citizens and market watchers eagerly awaiting the individual opinions that will soon be on public display.

Investors, economists, and ordinary citizens alike are anxious to understand the nuances behind the committee’s decisions, expecting that this unprecedented level of detail will shed light on the future direction of monetary policy in Ghana.

As the meeting unfolds, the nation watches closely, poised to read and analyze the committee’s verdicts, a decision that could redefine transparency and accountability in Ghana’s financial sector.
