Barcelona Dominate Wolfsburg to Take Charge of Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final—–Caitlin Dijkstra’s own goal and a quick double from Irene Paredes and Salma Paralluelo put Barcelona three goals up by the 53rd minute, before Janina Minge pulled one back for the hosts.
But substitute Sydney Schertenleib produced a fine finish with two minutes left to restore the visitors’ three-goal cushion, whipping an effort in off the underside of the crossbar.
Wolfsburg’s defence cracked after 26 minutes, when Caroline Graham Hansen slipped through Aitana Bonmati with an excellent pass and her low delivery was turned into her own goal by defender Dijkstra.
The German side showed glimpses of promise on the counter-attack, but it was nowhere near enough to match Barca’s slick final-third play and they remained relentless in the second half.
Barca netted twice within eight minutes of the restart to put the leg beyond doubt, with Paredes firing in at the near post after a short corner routine and Paralluelo rifling home a deflected effort from the edge of the box.
Defender Minge gave Wolfsburg hope of a way back in the tie when she headed home from her side’s first corner in the 79th minute, but Schertenleib made it 4-1 just before the end.
The result means six-time finalists Wolfsburg will have to upset the odds when they travel to Spain for the second leg on Thursday, 27 March (17:45 GMT), and Barcelona favourites to meet Manchester City or Chelsea in the last four.
